Can bar codes serve as trademarks?

Well the short answer is … yes. Beyond words and logos and so forth, the Trademark Office has continued to recognize an extensive range of marks that function as unique identifiers of a specific producer of a product or service. Colors, sounds and even smells have been granted registration. And bar codes are no exception.
